This is not an episode guide... it's just a little bit of episode trivia. All of the information was taken from I Want to Believe™ The Official Guide to The X-Files™ by Andy Meisler. No copyright infringement is intended... I'm only trying to share a little trivia with other philes who might enjoy it as much as I do. scene from Herrenvolk
October 4, 1996

You see, the fiercest enemy is the man who has nothing left to lose. - CSM

Location:  Alberta, Canada; Providence, Rhode Island; Washington, D.C.

Trivia:  To create the massive hanging honeycombs for the underground apiary sequences, the construction coordinator used a Fiberglas composite lattice, used in the aircraft industry that is, appropriately enough, commonly known as honeycomb.

The tagline for this episode is Everything Dies and the letters SRSG stand for Special Representative to the Secretary General of the United Nations.

scene from Unruhe
October 27, 1996

If there are such things as Howlers, Gerry, they live only inside your head. - Scully

Location:  Traverse City, Michigan; Washington, D.C.

Trivia:  Schnauz's terrifying thought Polaroids were posed and photographed by the show's prop department; copies and outtakes - especially those including Gillian Anderson - are now (were?) prominently display in the prop truck that follows the company on location.

The brand name on the druggist's instant camera, ETAP, is the last name of assistant prop master Jim Pate spelled backward.

scene from Home
October 11, 1996

I've quit the FBI and become a spokesperson for the Ab-Roller. - Scully

Location:  Home, Pennsylvania

Trivia:  A scene in which Mulder and Scully jostle each other suggestively in the tight confines of Sheriff Taylor's supply closet/morgue was filmed but ultimately cut.

The hogs appearing in the pig-sty scene were rented and while Anderson and Duchovny, in camera range, pushed against the pigs' hindquarters from their end of the herd, a team of pig wranglers, safely out of shot, pushed them back toward the actors from the other.

scene from Teliko
October 18, 1996

And not everybody is plotting to deceive, inveigle, and obfuscate. - Scully

Location:  Philadelphia; Washington, D.C.; United Nations Hdqtrs., New York City, New York

Trivia:  Teliko is Greek for end. The tagline on this episode was changed to Deceive, Inveigle, Obfuscate.

Teliko marks the debut of the expensive airplane cabin mock-up built specifically for Tempus Fugit and Max, but used here before its hydraulic special-effects shaking rig was completed.

Samuel Aboah's birthday is September 25, the same as Gillian Anderson's daughter, Piper.

scene from The Field Where I Died
November 3, 1996

She is sad. She is Melissa. Her name is Kavanaugh. My name is Sullivan Biddle. - Mulder

Location:  Apison and Chattanooga, Tennessee

Trivia:  The real creative godfather of this episode is Ken Burns, the creator of the PBS documentary series The Civil War. The wartime romance between Sullivan Biddle and Sarah Kavanaugh was inspired by the touching letters from Major Sullivan Ballou, a Union officer, and his wife, Sarah, that were a highlight of Burns' documentary.

"I loved that script. It made me cry. And the concept of Mulder and Scully meeting in a past life - it's something that, for once, I'd truly love to believe." -Gillian Anderson.

scene from Sanguinarium
November 11, 1996

I think he murdered those patients so that he could become Dr. Franklin. - Mulder

Location:  Chicago and Winnetka, Illinois; Los Angeles, California

No spell or incantation was powerful enough to stop the flood of angry letters and e-mail from supporters of Wicca and ritual magic in the X-Files audience. Angry practitioners and sympathizers accused the writers of insensitivity, defamation, blasphemy, and worse.

Trivia:  "This was one of the most repulsive scripts that I've done. During a couple of scenes - like when the doctor is stabbing the patient - I just had to shut my eyes." -Gillian Anderson

scene of the CSM
November 17, 1996

I can kill you whenever I please... but not today. - CSM

Location:  Washington, D.C.; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Dallas, Texas; Memphis, Tennessee

Trivia:  There was some concern before shooting this script that the dramatic impact of the Cigarette-Smoking Man would be diluted by turning the camera on him for an entire episode. What nobody was worried about, apparently, was that many viewers would take its entire premise at face value.

"They thought that this was indeed the factual history of the CSM. As far as I'm concerned, it's not. Some of it may be true, and some of it may - well, never mind." -Frank Spotnitz

scene from Paper Hearts
December 15, 1996

You're saying you're out here because there's something you saw in a dream? - Scully

Location:  Washington, D.C.; Manassas, Virginia; Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts

Trivia:  Paper Hearts was the season's eighth episode filmed but the tenth aired. Its completion and airing was postponed in order to free up postproduction resources for Tunguska and Terma. The two-parter had to be finished quickly in order to air during the February sweeps period.

A jump-shooting double was not hired to replace Duchovny in the shot in the prison gymnasium. In a total of seven takes, Duchovny swished four 25-footers.

scene from Tunguska
November 24, 1996

I believe answering that question could endanger Agent Mulder' life. - Scully

Location:  Washington, D.C.; Tunguska, Siberia, Russia

Trivia:  The idea of putting the alien oil in the rock was because of the August 7, 1996 NASA news conference Mars rock stories. After the news broke, I came in the next morning and said: 'Well, X-Files!'" -Frank Spotnitz

In the closed captioning for this episode, viewers saw Mulder pull a cockroach out of a tin of food and say "Bambi?" This is, of course, a reference to War of the Coprophages and the memorable entomologist Dr. Bambi Berenbaum.

scene from Terma
December 1, 1996

Why is this so hard to believe? When the accepted discovery of life off this planet is on the front page of every newspaper around the world? When the most conservative scientists and science journals are calling for exploration of Mars and Jupiter - with every reason to believe that life and persistence of it are thriving outside our terrestrial sphere? If you cannot get past this, then I suggest this whole committee be held in contempt - for ignoring evidence that cannot be refuted. - Mulder

Location:  Washington, D.C.; Tunguska, Siberia, Russia

Trivia:  The The tagline was changed to "E Pur Si Muove" or "Still, it moves."

scene from El Mundo Gira
January 12, 1997

God curses the man who stands between two brothers. - Mulder

Location:  San Joaquin Valley, California; Fresno, California

Trivia:  El Mundo Gira translates to The World Turns. As for El Chupacabra, it is a folk myth that still circulates powerfully throughout the Spanish-speaking world.

El Mundo Gira was a milestone of sorts for Mark Snow - it was the only episode in his memory during which Chris Carter aked him to throw out his entire score and start again. "So I went for it - rewriting the whole thing in one day. When I was finished, there was no non-Spanish music in the whole piece. And it worked!" -Mark Snow

scene from Kaddish
February 16, 1997

I want to know about the myth of the Golem. - Mulder

Location:  Brooklyn, New York

Trivia:  According to several historical accounts, the myth of the Golem inspired Mary Shelley when she wrote Frankenstein. A kaddish is a Jewish prayer for the dead recited in daily synagogue services by relatives of the deceased.

Although this was the 12th episode of the 4th season filmed, it was the 15th aired: Leonard Betts was slotted for the crucial post-Super Bowl time slot meaning Scully's cancer would be revealed. Never Again and Memento Mori had to run immediately afterwards.

scene from Never Again
February 2, 1997

So you're refusing an assignment based on the adventures of Moose and Squirrel? - Mulder

Location:  Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Washington, D.C.; Memphis, Tennessee

Trivia:  "... I wanted to explore Scully's dark side. I don't think that what I did here was out of character for Scully. The only thing different is that the audience hadn't seen it before. If I had known that Scully knew she had cancer when we were filming Never Again, I would have played the part differently." -Gillian Anderson

The Jodie Foster who's credited as the voice of Bettie is actually the Jodie Foster who is a longtime fan of the show.

scene from Leonard Betts
January 26, 1997

I think I got the toy surprise. - Mulder

Location:  Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; College Park, Maryland

Trivia:  The organ-slicing machine that the pathologist uses on Betts's severed head was conceived, designed, and built by props master Ken Hawryliw.

The faculty of the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston was so impressed with Mark Snow's work on Leonard Betts that this year, when he agreed to give a lecture on film scoring techniques, they asked him to concentrate on the seemingly seamless changes of mood and tempo he pulled off in the episode's opening scene.

scene from Memento Mori
February 9, 1997

The truth will save you Scully... I think it will save both of us. - Mulder

Location:  Washington, D.C.; Allentown and Lehigh Furnace, Pennsylvania

Trivia:  "I think their relationship (Mulder and Scully's) is defined not by what's said but by what's being withheld. But it's absolutely plain that they love each other - in their own way. And it's the best kind of love. It's unconditional. It's not based on a physical attraction, but on a shared passion for life and for their quest." -Chris Carter

The date on the drawer holding Scully's ova is November 29, 1994 - the date she was returned to the hospital in One Breath.

scene from Unrequited
February 23, 1997

Is that what you believe? Is that what you really believe? They're not just denying this man's life. They're denying his death. And with all due respect, sir, he could be you. - Mulder

Location:  Washington, D.C.; Fort Evanston, Maryland; Demeter, Virginia

Trivia:  Whose names are silk-screened on the face of the re-created fake Vietnam Memorial? Mostly nobody's. For legal reasons, the actual names could not be used. Art assistant Kristina Lyne asked her sister, who runs a typing service, to sit at her keyboard and make up 2,000 imaginary names. It took her 20 hours, imagining and typing nonstop.

scene from Tempus Fugit
March 16, 1997

9 minutes, Scully. Do you remember the last time you were missing nine minutes? - Mulder

Location:  Washington, D.C.; upstate New York

Trivia:  For his airplane abduction scenes, Max (Scott Bellis) was rigged up in a harness, then yanked out by a crane through an opening in the cabin mockup. "Then," he adds, "they did the same thing with a stunt man - they yanked him a lot harder."

For their work on Tempus Fugit twelve members of the X-Files post-production crew won the Emmy Award for Best Sound Editing, Series.

scene from Max
March 23, 1997

Hey Scully, my watch just stopped. - Mulder

Location:  Washington, D.C.; upstate New York

Trivia:  "Oh, man! That airplane was a really violent ride," recalls Kim Manners, the director of Max. "I mean, that thing traveled four feet in each direction and then rolled twenty-two degrees from side to side. I have never before worked with a crew where I had to put helmets on my camera operators. And I had eighty extras working on that scene. I mean, imagine saying to people, 'All right, we're gonna put you on this airplane for three days, we're gonna shake the s--- out of you, and I mean violently.'"

scene from Synchrony
April 13, 1997

Okay, this photo that was never taken - when was it never taken? - Scully

Location:  Cambridge, Massachusetts; Washington, D.C.

Trivia:  David Duchovny says, "I remember that we kept shooting makeup scenes, because obviously nobody could figure out whether the audience would understand what was going on. They would always be writing little one-page scenes where somebody would try to explain it."

"I think it all came out pretty well in the end. But when it was all over I vowed I would never touch another time travel idea again as long as I lived." -Howard Gordon, director

scene from Small Potatoes
April 20, 1997

I don't imagine you need to be told this, Mulder, but you're not a loser. - Scully

Location:  Martinsburg, West Virginia; Washington, D.C.; Arlington, Virginia

Trivia:  "A great, great script. And it was fun to do," says Duchovny, whose favorite bit of business was the heaven-help-me eye roll - a last-take improvisation - that he threw in at the exact moment he realizes that he's going to have to chase Eddie through the corridors of a small-town gynecologist's office.

"The character's kind of a loser. I don't want you to think that you're a loser." -Vince Gilligan to Darin Morgan who portrayed Eddie Van Blundht.

scene from Zero Sum
April 27, 1997

When a man digs a hole, he risks falling into it. - Cigarette-Smoking Man

Location:  Desmond and Crystal City, Virginia; Washington, D.C.; Elsinore, Maryland

Trivia: According to co-writer Howard Gordon: "Beating out a story without Scully and with only a minimal amount of Mulder, was like working 'with one hand tied behind our backs.' What we were trying to do was preserve Skinner's integrity as a character while he makes his deal with the devil, and at the same time allow us to better understand his character and his relationship with Mulder and Scully by taking him into the gray area between right and wrong. I mean, to what level is he willing to sacrifice himself for them?"

scene from Elegy
May 4, 1997

You can believe what you want to believe Scully, but you can't hide the truth from me - because if you do, you're working against me, and yourself. - Mulder

Location:  Washington, D.C.

Trivia:  Gillian Anderson remembers Elegy as being an emotionally draining episode. "There were some very good, very real transactions between Mulder and Scully."

Says David Duchovny, "I realized how old I am. I was sore after the bowling scenes. When you get sore from bowling, it's time to start thinking about your life and where its going."

Trivia:  During a scene between Agent Scully and Detective Curtis in the apartment of a police officer who has committed suicide, careful observers can see the moving shadow of a crew member on the wall behind Scully.

This is the only episode written by Vancouver producer R.W. Goodwin and only the second time a director or crew member has written an episode (the other was Wetwired (3.23) written by X-Files special effects maven Mat Beck.

scene from Gethsemane
May 18th, 1997

Agent Mulder died last night of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. - Scully

Location:  Boston, Massachusetts; Washington, D.C.; Arlington and Sethsburg, Virginia

Trivia:  The season-ender earned one of the highest ratings of the season and amazingly, set off a nationwide buzz of speculation as to whether Mulder was really dead. A cartoon that ran in The New Yorker showed a deeply depressed man lying on a psychiatrist's couch. "I see no problem with a limited period of grief," says the shrink, "as long as you keep in mind that Agent Mulder was a fictional character."

The tagline was changed to Believe the Lie.
